John Stutz -------------------------------------------------------------------- Finders Guide for BLW outside framed 2-8-0 steam locomotives. Compiled by John Stutz, copyright 2/2003 This Guide is based on the Baldwin Locomotive Works' Class Lists preserved by C. W. Witbeck and held by the DeGolyer Library. It has been supplemented with dimensional data taken from the BLW Drawings Index held by Stanford University, various BLW Records of Recent Construction, a number of BLW photopasters in public and private hands, and contemporary engineering magazines. Its principal value, beyond the basic listing, is the inclusion of index numbers for corresponding items in the DeGolyer Library collection of BLW erection drawings, and the Herb Broadbelt Collection of BLW builders photographs. Baldwins built their first outside framed (OF) locomotive in November of 1886. This was a 30" gauge 2-4-2 tender engine for the Ferro Carril Antofagasta y Bolivia, serving the Nitrate districts in northern Chile (Westing p55). Baldwins' first OF 2-8-0 was built just a year later for the 3' gauge National de Mexico. The first for service in the United States followed in February of 1889 for the Des Moines & Kansas City RR. Baldwin's last OF 2-8-0 was built for the 3'6" gauge Ferrocarriles Ecuatorianos in 1952. In 65 years of production, Baldwin built roughly 400 OF 2-8-0's. This list identifies nearly 400 BLW 2-8-0's known to have outside frames, plus another 50 probables, and about 16 debatables. Such identification is only possible through a quirk of Baldwin's recording: the Class List identifies the drawing number for every purchase, and locomotives built to the same drawing were essentially identical. It helps that the Drawings Index identifies all OF designs made prior to its cutoff of circa 1909. For the rest, a photograph of any one decides for all others built to the same drawing. A primary reason for compiling this list was to help modelers find resources for modeling obscure prototypes. For instance, Robert Turner's "The Skyline Limited" documents the history of the Kaslo & Slocan in British Colombia's Selkirk Range. The K&S had one big engine, the former Des Moines & Kansas City 2-8-0, built to drawing 12 of class 10-26-E. Turner found one good photo of it, but could give only the most basic of dimensions. This list identifies a builder's photo and erection drawing of another locomotive built to the same class and drawing, sufficient for quite accurate work. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Notes on the Listing This listing is given in Baldwin class order, and thus essentially by cylinder bore diameter. The relative ordering of compound and single expansion engines is arbitary. Since all of the listed compounds are Vauclain 4-cylinder types, I have chosen to order them by low pressure cylinder bore, and place them immediately before the same size single expansion cylinders. Thus class 10-10/22-E immedialty preceeds 10-22-E. The 4-cylinder single expansion class 10-21/21-E is placed before 10-32-E on the basis of equated cylinder bore. For those not familier with the BLW class coding, any 10-xx-E is a 2-8-0 with cylinder code xx. Compound cylinders are coded as hh/ll for high and low pressure cylinders. To get cylinder bore in inches, divide the code by 2 and then add 3. So class 10-22-E denotes all types of 14" cylinder 2-8-0's, regardless of design, while the 10-10/22-E are 8"&14" cylinder compounds. A few classes have a cylinder code suffix of 1/2, denoting a long piston stroke relatieve to driver diameter, and thus greater tractive force than usual for the same cylinder bore and boiler pressure. The use of this suffix was dropped circa 1910. BLW locomotives normally had a piston stroke equal to about half the driver diameter. Given this, and assuming equal boiler pressure, all locomotives in the class would have about the same nominal tractive force(TF) and need the same weight on drivers (WoD) to avoid slipping. This holds true regardless of gauge and driver diameter. Historically, there was a gradual increase in average boiler pressures throughout the steam era, and a corresponding increase in nominal TF and WoD. And at any one date there could be considerable variation in the boiler pressures that different roads would accept, and the corresponding locomotive sizes. But in general, locomotives of a given class and date will be of much the same size, even though they differ greatly in design. The construction of many of these designs spans the years 1902-1905. Prior to 1900, BLW's outside framed locomotives were built with plain outside cranks, and the counter weights were cast into the driver centers, as on inside framed locomotives. Beginning about 1902, BLW begain experimenting with outside counter weights incorporated into the cranks. Outside framed engines built during 1902-05 may have a variety of evolving arrangements, and photographs need to be consulted. Engines built after 1905 normally have wide counter weights on all driving axles. The decision is documented in the BLW Drawing Office Bible: "S.M.V. / KR 4.13.05 Hereafter on outside frame engines put counterbalance in the driving crank opposite the wrist pins. If additional weight is necessary place it in the wheel so located as to counterbalance the effect of the weight being in a different plane from the rods. Same as is done with balanced compound engines." The photographic record shows that this change was retroactivly applied to new production from pre-1905 designs. Thus the four essentially identical Arizona Copper Co. engines show at lest three crank arrangements, while the Shannon Arizona and the Quincy & Torch Lake engines, copies of Crystal River 103, have a full set of wide counterweights. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- List Format Within each class, the drawings are listed in numerical order. For each drawing I give the gauge, source(s) identifying it as having outside frames, and dimensional data if available. Under each drawing I list the locomotive orders built to that drawing, in Class List order. Except for gauge, I give the complete Class List entry, rendered as accuratly as I can transcribe the manuscript entries. Elements that appear, from the handwriting, to have been added to the Lists after the original entry, are enclosed in square brackets []. My own additions are enclosed in curly brackets {}. The dimensional data is formatted as: , x / @ , , + , RS- x + x . The boiler pressure is in Lbs/sq". Unless specified, all other dimensions are in inches(") of 25.4mm, and 12" to the foot('). The types refer to general arrangement diagrams in the Drawings Index, and are described below. Essentially, any two drawings of the same class and type have similar mechanical arrangements. The "RS" denotes a radially stayed firebox crown sheet, and appears to be common to all boilers on these locomotives. The common alternative is "CB", for crown bar staying. Within a locomotive order entry, an eXXXX_Y indicates that the DeGolyer Library holds a erection drawing, index# XXXX of type Y, made for this specific order. The DeGolyer drawing type codes are SE for side elevations and CS for cross sections. Most of these matches are documented by DeGolyer's identification of the class and class construciton numbers. While made for specific orders, these drawings will be essentially correct for any locomotive built to the same class and drawing number. Similarly, an nXXXX identifies a BLW builder's photograph catalogued in the Herb Broadbelt Collection, currently held by the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania. Those given as nXXXX? are tentative identifications from Herb's catalogues of circa 1970, photographs which I have not actually seen. All other Broadbelt negative numbers are taken from prints or reproductions in my collection. The matches to locomotive orders are generally based on company names and the construction dates. _______________________________________________________________________________ 8-28-E 1 3'0" BLW-DI; {an 0-8-0} type 2, 17x20/39@__, , 11'0"+0", RS-56x14'10.5"+54x45, 1 6/1893 Central RR & Banking Co of Ga. {rebuilt to 2-8-0} S.C. 1 {built as Crystal River RR #100 ?} { 6/1900 Crystal River #101,2 - See class 10-28-E, which references this.} ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10-18-E 2 2'6" BLW-DI type 4, 12x18/36@150, 24, 11'5"+5'9", RS-38x10'3"+66x20, 8 10/1905 Krajewski-Pesant Co. These type diagrams are basicly sketches showing the arrangement of wheels, framing, cylinders, boiler, tank, bunker, cab and steam dome. They are only indicative of any specific locomotive's appearence. 8-E-2 - Has a deep square firebox with level grate, behind the drivers, dropped between integral single bar rear frame extensions. The vertical backhead is just behind the cab rear wall. The first and third driver pairs are minimally spaced, with about 1.5 driver diameters between #2 and #3 axles. Two window cab. No lead truck. 10-E-4 - Has a narrow firebox between the drivers and over #4 axle, with grate sloped ahead of that axle. The rear grate is level and dropped slightly below the top frame bars. The drivers are minimally spaced, with #2 & #3 blind. The cab rear wall is about 1' behind the vertical backhead. The framing is identical to a conventional inside frame, with double rear bars. Three window cab. 10-E-41 - Has a deep square firebox behind the drivers, with a flat grate, dropped between integral horiziontal single bar rear frame extensions. Drivers #2 & #3 are blind, with axles spaced at about 1.8 driver diameters. The other driver pairs have a few inches between the flanges. The vertical backhead extends behind the cab rear wall. Three window cab. 10-E-42 - This is a side tank engine with coal bunker behind the cab. Has a Narrow firebox, with flat grate, over #3 & #4 driver axles, dropped slightly below the top frame rails. Drivers #2 & #3 are blind and closely spaced, while the other axles are spaced at about 1.5 driver diameter. Two windows plus door in cab side. 10-E-46 - The type diagram is missing from my microfilm. 10-E-47 - Has a deep square firebox, behind the drivers, with a flat grate, dropped between double bar rear frame extension. The frame extensions are seperate from the main frames. The vertical backhead extends just behind the rear cab wall. All drivers are minimally spaced, with #2 and #3 drivers blind. Two window cab. 10-E-48 - Has a shallow square firebox behind the drivers, with a flat grate, placed above the integral single bar rear frame extensions. The #2 & #3 drivers are blind, with axles spaced about 1.8 driver diameters. The other driver pairs are closely spaced. The vertical backhead is just within the rear cab wall. Three window cab. 10-E-56 - Has a shallow narrow firebox atop the frames and between #3 and #4 drivers, extending well behind the latter. The first and third driver pairs are spaced about 1.4 driver diameters, with the center pair closely spaced and with blind tires. The vertical backhead is just within the rear cab wall. Two window cab. 10-E-64 - This is a tank & tender engine, with auxillary side tanks placed ahead of the steam dome. Has a deep square firebox behind the drivers, with a flat grate, dropped between the single bar rear frame extensions. Drivers #2 & #3 are blind, with axles spaced about 1.6 driver diameters. The other drivers are closely spaced. The vertical backhead is just enclosed by the rear cab wall. Two window cab. 10-E-79 - Has a deep square firebox behind the drivers, with a sloping grate, placed over an integral sloping single bar rear frame extensions. The sloping backhead extends well behind the rear cab wall. The drivers are all closely spaced, with #2 and #3 drivers blind, and about .5 driver diameter clearence between #1 and the cylinders. Cab has one narrow and one wide window. 10-E-80 - Has a shallow narrow firebox atop the frames and between #4 drivers. Drivers all closely spaced, except between #3 and #4. Flanges on all drivers. Three window cab. 10-E-84 - has a shallow square firebox behind the drivers, with a level grate, over an level integral single bar rear frame extension. The sloping backhead is completely within the cab. The #2-#4 drivesrs are closely spaced, with small gaps between #1 and #1 drivers, and ahead of #1. Flanges on all drivers. Single arch window cab. 10-E-90 - Has a deep square firebox behind the drivers, with a sloping grate, over an integral sloping single bar rear frame extensions. The backhead is just enclosed by the rear cab wall. Driver axles #1 & #2 are spaced at about 1.3 driver diameters. The other pairs are closely spaced, with #2 driver blind, and driver #1 about .5 diameter clear of the cylinders. Two window cab. 10-E-91 - Has a deep square firebox behind the drivers, with level grate, dropped between bolted on double bar rear frame extensions. The sloping backhead is well within the cab. Driver axles are spaced about 1.3 driver diameters. The other pairs are closely spaced. Drivers 2 & 3 are probably blind. There is about .7 driver diameter space between driver 1 and the cylinders. Single arch window cab. 12 1/4-E-2 - Has a deep square firebox behind the drivers, dropped between bolted on single bar rear frame extensions. Has a swing link centered trailing axle behind the firebox. The backhead is at the middle of the cab. Drivers #2 & #3 are blind, with axles spaced at about 1.5 diameters. The other driver pairs are closely spaced, and the lead driver is close up against the cylinders. 12-F-4 - has a deep square firebox with level grate, dropped behind the drivers and frames. The frames are stubbed off just in front of the firebox. The drivers are spaced as closely as possible, together and to the cylinders and firebox. Only #1 and #5 drivers have flanges. Three window cab. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
