From: John Stutz Date: Mon May 12, 2003 1:05 pm Subject: D&RGW and similar 4-6-0 & 2-8-0 ADVERTISEMENT Peter Grace asked for information on the smaller D&RG(W) locomotives, and advice/information on what locomotives are close in dimension to those above and corresponding plans/dimension details. The following is a fairly complete listing of Baldwin locomotives that were either mechanically identical to, or very similar to, the types that operated on the D&RG(W). Note that this only covers original purchasers. Many of these locomotives passed through the hands of several owners before being scrapped. John Stutz ______________________________________________________________________ BLW/D&RG Narrow Guage Erection Drawings Prepared by John C Stutz, largley from original BLW records. This is a preliminary attempt to list the BLW erection drawings, held by the DeGolyer Library, that depict narrow gauge BLW designs purchased by the D&RG/D&RGW. Only three of the locomotive drawings currently listed depict puchases by the D&RG. The other listed drawings were identified by first determining the BLW design (class and drawing number) of D&RG purchases, and then searching for erection drawings of other locomotives built to the same design. This version is limited to D&RG/D&RGW narrow gauge 4-6-0's and 2-8-0's. The D&RG/D&RGW roster information is taken from the Colorado Railroad Museum's "Locomotives of the Rio Grande", published 1980. The BLW classes are determined from the dimensions given with the rosters, and drawing numbers were identified by matching dates against the BLW Drawings List, the original of which is held by the DeGolyer Library. The erection drawing entries are taken from DeGolyer's "BLW Erecting Card Drawings", second edition of 1991. In these, the drawing type codes SE and CS refer to side elevations and cross section respectivly. The dimensioal data is taken from the BLW Drawings Index, a manuscript record covering designs prepared prior to about 1905, held by the Stanford University Library. This dimensional data is formatted as: x / @ , , + , RS- x + x , . The boiler pressure is in Lbs/sq". Unless specified, all other dimensions are in inches(") of 25.4mm, and 12" to the foot('). The types refer to general arrangement diagrams in the Drawings Index. Essentially, any two drawings of the same class and type have similar mechanical arrangements. The "RS/ST" denotes a radially stayed firebox crown sheet and straight boiler. The common alternatives are "CB" for crown bar staying, and "WT" for wagon top boilers. Note that locomotives built to the same design, at quite different dates or for different roads, while essentially identical mechanically, may differ considerably in appearence due to the nature and placement of auxillaries. Even when identical locomotives were supplied to different roads, their appearence diverged over time, due to the different standards for repair and reconstruction. _______________________________________________________________________________ D&RG class 45.5 4-6-0 14"x20" 45" 53,400# 10,503# 142# @85% Built 1881 as D&RG 158-165, to BLW class 10-22 D, drawing 2. The 158, 159 and 165 were sold 7/12/86 to RGW #20-22, 4/1/92 to RGS #22-24. The RGS #24 was sold 1900, and all others scrapped in 1916. D&RGW T-12 4-6-0 14"x20" 45" 56,550# 11,590# 156# @85% Built 1883-4 as D&RG class 47 numbers 166-77, to BLW class 10-22 D, drawing 3. Dismantled 1926-34, except #168 was donated to Colorado Springs and #169 to Alamosa. DeGolyer lists no erection drawings for any of these locomotives. The BLW Class List shows the following locomotives constructed to these two drawings, and to drawing 1 for the standard gauge D&RG class 46, #155-157. The CRM roster shows construction dates of 1877 for #24 and 1878 for #25-32. The Class List shows that class 10-24 E #9-13 being delivered to the D&RG in November of 1877. These dates are consistant, allowing for transportation delays, thus rendering suspect the DeGolyer dates and/or identifications. The Class List indicates there was some confusion as to which of the early D&RG 2-8-0's should be in class 10-24-E (56) or 10-24 1/2-E (60). Early D&RG locomotives in each class were built to slightly altered drawings from the other class. Not having examined the D&RG erection drawings, I cannot state which class and drawing number they actually match. These locomotives set the standard for heavy Americn narrow gauge freight power for the next decade, two decades in Colorado. Given their historical importance, I have included all locomotives built to the first 10 drawings of class 10-24 E, and the first 3 of 10-24 1/2 E. This covers almost all 15" cylinder 2-8-0's up to the introduction of outside framed versions. Despite the diversity of gauges and purchasers, these designs show a remarkable degree of similarity. ________________________________________ D&RG Class 56 2-8-0 15"x18" 36" 56,000# 12,450# 130# @85% Drawings Index - 10-24 E: # gauge Cyl Dr BP Tk wheelbase boiler grate type date 1, 1m, 15x18/37@__, 24, 12'0"+6'2", CB/WT-46x10'0"+80x28, 55, 1876 " " " " " CB/ST-48x10'0"+ " " ? 2, 1m, 15x18/37@__, 24, 11'6"+6'2", CB/WT-46x 9'7"+80x28, 55, 1877 " " " " " CB/St-48x 9'7"+ " " ? 3, 3'0", 15x18/36@__, 24, 11'4"+6'6", RS/ST-48x10'0"+80x25, 55, 1878 " " " " " RS/ST-50x 9'7"+84x25, " 1879 4, 3'6", 15x18/36@__, 24, 11'4"+6'6", CB/St-48x10'0"+79x28, 55, 1879 5, 3'6", 15x18/36@__, 25, 11'4"+6'6", CB/St-48x10'0"+80x29, 55, 1879 6, 3'0", 15x18/37@__, 24, 11'6"+6'6", RS/St-48x10'0"+80x25, 55, 1879 7, 3'0", 15x18/37@__, 24, 11'4"+6'6", RS/St-48x10'0"+80x25, 56, 1880 8, 1m, 15x18/37@__, 24, 12'0"+6'2", RS/St-48x10'2"+80x28, 56, 1881 9, 1m, 15x18/37@__, 24, 11'6"+6'2", RS/St-48x 9'4"+80x27, 56, 1883 10, 3'6", 15x18/36@__, 28, 12'4"+6'5", CB/St-48x11'3"+77x29, 63, 1885 The main difference between the 10-E types 55 and 56 is in the spring rigging of the two rear axles. For their heavy wood burning 2-8-0's of 1881-83 they ordered 33 engines to 10-26 E d3, fitted with a deep square firebox hanging behind very closely spaced drivers. Oddly, both types appear to have been grouped in NdM class G-01. In 1884 the Interoceanico ordered 4 engines to 10-26 E d8, equipped with similar firebox and boiler on stubbed off 10-26 E d2 frames. These types led to the outside framed 2-8-0, a design which provided proper support for such fireboxes, first built as NdM #113, a 10-26 E d12 of 1887. Originally Crystal River RR #103, built to 10-30 E drawing 7. Purchased by the D&RG in 1916 and numbered D&RG 432, later renumbered D&RGW 375, and dismantled in Alamosa 6/21/49. Note that the D&RGW rebuilt this engine's cab twice, greatly altering its appearence both times, and the erection drawing is not correct for either of these later cabs. Six engines were built to this drawing. All but the Crystal River 103 were built after Samual Vauclain's 4.13.05 decision to put all possible counter weight in the driving cranks of outside framed engines. So these differ mechanicly from the #103 in having wide counter weight cranks, while the #103 has plain cranks.
